What jackets to sew for mid-season?

Please share!

As summer draws to a close, the back-to-school season brings with it a desire to renew your wardrobe. If you’ve already got a bit of sewing experience under your belt, why not make yourself a mid-season jacket?

This project often involves a few technical points (collar, button placket…) but the result is worth the effort!

We take a look at the season’s trends to start the school year with plenty of new patterns on your wish list.

A suede jacket for a bohemian look

This autumn, the bohemian look is making a comeback. We’re back to loose, flowing dresses, natural colors and floral prints, as well as suede jackets reminiscent of the 70s and the heyday of the hippie movement!

If you want to sew this timeless piece at home, you can use suede. Suede is an imitation suede, made of polyester and sometimes a little elastane. It’s much less expensive and easier to work with than suede.

If you want to sew a suede jacket, you can use the Criollo pattern from Maison Fauve. To be on trend this season, use suede in a natural shade: brown, taupe

A cape for autumn

The cape is also making a comeback this season. This wardrobe basic can be worn well into winter. But if you use a lightweight woollen fabric or gabardine, the cape will be just the thing for mid-season.

Layer it with a soft cotton or viscose, harmonizing colors and patterns. To match the autumn mood, choose a terracotta, dark brown or deep red fabric.

Unlike the other jackets, the cape can be sewn by beginners who have already sewn one or two garments, as it involves fewer technical difficulties than blazers or trench coats. You can follow the Vestiaire Éponyme pattern for detailed explanations.

The cape is a wardrobe classic that's quick and easy to sew!

The short trench coat, this season’s big trend

The trench coat is a timeless essential that regularly comes back into fashion in beige or colored versions, in gabardine or faux leather… For this season, the trench coat will be worn short, with the hem at the top of the thighs. Apart from this slight modification, we’re keeping all the hallmarks of this piece: the belt, the shirt collar, the flaps…

The I am Patterns pattern, Bob, offers several variations of the trench, including a short version that’s right on trend.

For mid-season suitability, the trench coat can be sewn with a fairly thick gabardine or a thin woollen fabric. For a classic look, choose a beige fabric. For a more original result, opt for a pretty dark burgundy.

Sewing a trench coat isn't easy! But what satisfaction, and what class!

An oversized blazer in faux leather

Like suede, leather will be very fashionable this winter. When it comes to sewing, you can opt for imitation, which is easy and pleasant to sew, more economical and much easier to find!

This autumn, leather will be used in particular to sew blazers that are quite long and very wide, in the spirit of an 80s revival. Atelier Brunette’s pattern creates a wide, comfortable blazer.

Please note that when sewing imitation leather, you must be careful to use a suitable needle. Not a “leather” needle, contrary to popular belief, but a Jean’s or Universal 100 needle. Avoid using pins to avoid piercing the fabric. Use fabric clips instead.

The Saharan jacket emerges from oblivion

Originally worn by the British army in India at the end of the 19th century, this jacket was revived by Yves Saint-Laurent in the late 60s and is back on every catwalk. It’s recognizable by its multiple pockets and belted waist.

As with the suede jacket, we prefer to sew it in a rather natural shade: taupe, beige, brown… And we choose a fabric that’s well suited to the mild temperatures of mid-season, such as cotton gabardine or denim.

For patterns, follow Coralie Bijasson’s Narcisse. The designer explains step by step how to sew this piece, rich in technical details.
