What colors and fabrics will be in vogue this fall?

What fabrics, patterns and colors will you want to wear in September? Summer is a good time to plan your back-to-school wardrobe, or at least to start thinking about it.

A brief overview of autumn trends.

Green is on a roll

This autumn, we’ll be seeing life in green! On the catwalks, the color of hope has gradually overtaken red, which has been very much in vogue in recent seasons. So we’ll be seeing green everywhere, in all its variations: khaki green, fir green, aniseed green… From the deepest hue to the most acidic.

To really bring out the green, you can sew a trench coat with a khaki gabardine that’s perfect for mid-season.

The Pretty patrons pattern allows you to sew this fairly technical piece, ideal for challenging yourself and learning new technical stitches (welt pockets, button ties, tailored sleeves…). To sew this timeless piece for children, head for Burda!

Brown on a wispy fabric

Brown will also be back in fashion this autumn. Not light brown, but a rather dark brown, tending towards the reddish. Not necessarily a color that’s easy to wear, but one that can be paired with a light, wispy fabric, such as a flowing viscose.

To wear brown this autumn, sew Miss Cactus’ Mirabelle dress. Its ruffles will break up the sadness of this color and give it some pizzazz.

Checks and tartans

Originally, tartan was a woolen fabric worn by Celtic peoples. It’s famous for its sometimes vivid lines of color: blue, green, yellow, red, purple… This autumn, checks will be back in fashion, on wool fabrics as well as on lighter cottons. These patterns are particularly suitable for sewing a strong piece, such as a short skirt reminiscent of a kilt. Or for a cape, which will be very fashionable this winter!

The Capypso skirt from the eponymous Vestiaire, with its asymmetrical cut and short shape, will give traditional checks a new lease of life. To sew it, you can choose a woollen or gabardine fabric, depending on the desired look and thickness.

If you want to give your outfit an English touch, the La Captivante cape, sewn from fine wool, is the perfect project.

For children aged 2 to 14, we can sew the Perrine de l’Enfant roi cape.

Colorful faux fur

As in previous seasons, faux fur will be right on trend. Choose colorful red, green, bright blue or yellow to add a touch of whimsy to your wardrobe. The Goya mid-season jacket (also available in children’s and baby sizes ), inspired by the shepherd’s vest, is a good model to sew for mid-season. It keeps you warm for the first cool days of autumn without having to break out the winter coat. The vest can be lined with a cotton print to match the main color.

And if you’ve never sewn before or only have a few basics, this is a great starting point for taming your sewing machine. So quick and easy, you’ll want to make several to match your different outfits!

Back to school in leopard print

Leopard print was very much in evidence on the catwalks announcing autumn-winter, worn on large faux-fur coats and extravagant dresses. To make the most of this powerful print, which never goes unnoticed, pair it with a flowing viscose.

We use this viscose to sew a fairly classic blouse or top. It can be worn with jeans and a jacket. For example, you can use the Blondie pattern from Un chat sur un fil, a slightly low-cut wrap blouse that will work well with a leopard print. Or Anna Rose’s Vikky blouse, whose simple shape is reminiscent of a t-shirt.
