Sewable pyjamas for children this winter
As winter approaches, it’s time to slip into warm pyjamas for cocooning evenings and weekends!
Here are a few patterns to sew this seasonal must-have for all the kids in your life.
Comfortable jersey pyjamas
When it comes to sewing ultra-comfortable winter pajamas, the best choice is stretch jersey. This gives children freedom of movement and prevents them from feeling too engulfed in the garment.
Thick jersey, quilted jersey and fleece-lined jersey are readily available in stores and online. So many options to keep you warm all night long.
You can follow our pattern and video tutorial: Chaource pyjamas. It can be sewn on a serger or sewing machine. However, don’t forget to use an elastic stitch and a special needle. This pattern, which contains the long-sleeved t-shirt and pants, elasticated at the waist for added comfort, is fairly simple and contains no particularly technical stitches. It can be used to sew a first jersey project.
A good way to familiarize yourself with this stretch fabric.
Fleece pyjamas for warmth
For warmth in the depths of winter, you can sew pyjamas using fleece, minky (a soft polyester velvet) or doudou (thicker than fleece). All these synthetic-fiber fabrics are very cozy and come in printed versions that children will love.
To sew fleece pajamas, you can again use the Chaource pattern or the Petits D’om pattern, Pilou, which is available for ages 2 to 16 and is designed for these thicker fibers. Here again, you’ll find a long-sleeved top and elasticated pyjama bottoms that are easy to sew and perfect for getting started with stretchy synthetic fabrics.
Lovely velvet pyjamas
If you prefer natural fibers to their synthetic counterparts, then you can sew pretty pajamas with cotton milleraies velvet. Commercial velvets often contain a small percentage of elastane, making them comfortable enough for children’s pyjamas.
A more classic pajama pattern can be used for this project, such as the Budapest pattern from Ikatee. This contains instructions for sewing a top with a blouse shape and a tailored collar, and a straight bottom with an elasticated waistband. There are also pockets on each side. To sew this model, you’ll need to have a good level of sewing skills and be familiar with a few techniques, such as collar assembly, piping and side pockets…
You can also reuse this pattern to sew summer pyjamas using double cotton gauze or breathable linen.
A cosy nightdress
If your child prefers to wear nightgowns, then you can follow this Burda pattern. It allows you to sew a long-sleeved nightdress with, if you prefer, matching pants.
For this project, you’ll need stretch jersey. The garment will be comfortable to wear and won’t be too tight at night. You’ll also need to add ribbing to the collar and sleeves. You can use thin or thick jersey, fleece-lined jersey or a cosy fabric for a cozy result.
This project is a good way to get started with stockinette.
A onesie for babies
Babies, too, are entitled to nice, warm, comfortable pyjamas for winter. If you’d like to make one for your child or as a gift, you can follow Super Bison’s Honey pattern.
Pyjamas are closed at the side with press studs. They are sewn in jersey, preferably cotton. And you can add different finishes as you wish: ruffles, collar…
To sew this baby garment, you’ll need a good knowledge of sewing. And to have already sewn stretch jersey!
What about you? Do you usually sew winter pyjamas? What fabrics do you use?
