Dresses to sew in no time for summer
Summer’s well and truly here, but there’s still time to sew a pretty, comfortable and practical dress to enjoy the beautiful season.
You don’t need to spend hours on it to achieve a beautiful result.
Here are a few quick and easy patterns that will take you everywhere this summer!
A comfortable wrap dress
Jersey, a fine stretch knit, is perfect for sewing a summer dress. It provides a close-fitting garment that’s both comfortable and pleasant to wear. Be careful, however, with jersey composition: prefer cotton to synthetics, the latter being much more breathable in hot weather.
Atelier Adriette’s Sandy pattern is made with two colors of jersey, so that the waistband contrasts with the rest of the dress. The pattern is accessible to beginners and quick to sew for the more experienced. If you’ve never sewn jersey but want to give it a try, this is a good pattern to get you started. It’s easy to customize by alternating colors, choosing a contrasting jersey for the waistband…
Long for all occasions
If you prefer to sew a warp-and-weft fabric such as cotton poplin, viscose, double cotton gauze… you can opt for Miss Cactus’ Wasabi dress. With its long shape and kimono sleeves, it can be sewn for everyday wear (using a colorful or printed cotton fabric) or for an occasion such as a wedding or christening (opting instead for a fluid, shiny viscose or other satiny fabric). It’s quick and easy to sew, and you’ll just need enough fabric (between 2 and 3 meters) to accommodate its fullness and ankle-length.
A flared dress to recycle all year round
If you fancy sewing a pretty jersey dress that you can wear again this autumn or winter with tights, a jacket and ankle boots, then Miss Cactus’ Capucine dress is perfect for you. A dress with a V-neckline and flared skirt that’s very versatile and suitable for both warm days and mid-season. Capucine is a good project if you want to sew a dress quickly or if you’re just starting out.
You’ll simply need to find a jersey thin enough (but not too transparent) to highlight the fluidity of its fall. The model also allows you to sew a version with long sleeves for winter.
A dress with a boat neckline
In recent months, the boat neck has made a stunning comeback in fashion! We’ve seen it on catwalks and in store windows. It’s a straight neckline reminiscent of a sailor’s wardrobe.
To play this timeless card to the hilt, choose a viscose or cotton poplin with blue and white stripes. And place decorative gold buttons on one shoulder, reminiscent of a marinière.
The Signac des Patronnes pattern allows you to sew a light dress with a boat neck and a thin belt to mark the waist. Its straight shape makes it a quick and pleasant pattern to sew for summer.
A trendy skater dress!
The skater dress is a timeless piece! It’s particularly flattering in shape, with its belted waist, pretty neckline and flared skirt. It’s a model that can only be sewn with jersey. It sits close to the body at the bust. Be careful when choosing fabric. It shouldn’t be too sheer, but fluid enough for an elegant hemline.
The skater dress is a good project for quick sewing. It’s perfect for beginners and those who want to sew jersey for the first time. It’s so comfortable that once you’ve taken it off, you’ll want to wear it in a variety of prints and colors all summer long!
There are many patterns to choose from, such as Super Bison’s Marilyne.
